Hitachi Cable begins sales of the AquaVocal2120-FXSO, an all-in-one IP-PBX equipped with 20 FXS ports

*This product finished sales on June 30th of 2008.

Hitachi Cable is pleased to announce the development of the AquaVocal2120-FXSO, a new product in the AquaVocal*1All-in-One IP-PBX*2 series, equipped with 20 FXS ports for analog phone connections, with sales beginning on November 20, 2006.

In recent years, the decreasing prices and increasing functions of data communication networks have led to the rapid spread of IP telephony services. Against this backdrop, Hitachi Cables is marketing its AquaVocal All-in-One IP-PBX series equipped with a variety of functions*3, introducing IP telephony services to small or mid-size offices with 200 users or less.

When introducing IP telephony services, some enterprises select IP-PBX systems and change all of their phones to IP phones. On the other hand, to suppress initial costs, other businesses introduce IP telephony services only in their external lines, or implement these systems partially, adding IP phones to internal and external lines while maintaining existing PBX and analog phones. To introduce IP telephony services more efficiently in these cases, many enterprises have expressed a desire for IP-PBX products that can accommodate many analog telephone lines.

To respond to these demands, Hitachi Cable has now developed the AquaVocal2120-FXSO, with sales scheduled to begin on November 20.

The AquaVocal2120-FXSO is compact, yet equipped with 20 FXS ports for connecting analog telephone lines, four FXO ports*4 to accommodate analog lines connected to the public telephone network, a LAN port for connecting to the IP service of a communications carrier, and a LAN port for internal IP phones.

Thus, by placing AquaVocal2120-FXSO upstream of the existing PBX devices, and by accommodating PBX communication in the FXS port, the AquaVocal2120-FXSO functions as a gateway to the IP telephony services of the communications carrier via an external line. Further, by connecting the LAN port of the AquaVocal2120-FXSO to a corporate network and introducing IP phones, the AquaVocal2120-FXSO supplies IP telephony services partially to the internal phone system while simultaneously maintaining the existing PBX devices. In this case, for the IP phones the user can choose from fixed IP phones, the WirelessIP5000 wireless IP phone, or dual mobile phones that support FMC service*5, allowing the phone to be used as a wireless IP phone within the company and as a mobile phone outdoors.

On the other hand, the AquaVocal2120-FXSO can connect to the public telephone network through its FXO ports. Thus, in the event of connection failure in IP telephony services, the bypass function can automatically switch to an analog line, allowing users to make calls through the public telephone network. Further, the FXO ports operate as pass-through ports in the event of office power failure, enabling calls via the public telephone network.

The IP telephony services supported by the AquaVocal series currently include the Hikari Denwa Business Type service of by Nippon Telegraph and Telephone East Corporation and Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West Corporation and the FUSION IP-Phone provided by Fusion Communications Corporation. Beginning next spring, the series will also support the KDDI Hikari Direct and KDDI-IP Phone services of KDDI Corporation. Customers can choose from among these services according to their needs.

With the new addition of the AquaVocal2120-FXSO to the AquaVocal series, Hitachi Cable will be able to respond to the increasingly diverse needs of its customers, with plans to expand its market share among small and mid-size office IP-PBX systems.

*1 AquaVocal is a registered trademark of Hitachi Cable, Ltd. in Japan.
*2PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. IP-PBX refers to a Private Branch Exchange for an IP telephony system.
*3In addition to the IP-PBX function, AquaVocal is equipped with various gateway functions (connecting different networks, including communications carriers, IP telephony networks, the public telephone network, and internal telephone networks); the PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet: permits use of PPP over Ethernet networks; the PPP protocol is used to link computers to networks over telephone lines); and a backup function that allows communication between analog phones and the public network during power failures.
*4Three of the four FXO ports operate as pass-through ports, enabling connection to the public telephone network even in the event of power failure.
*5The FMC (Fixed Mobile Convergence) service combines the use of fixed and mobile phones.
