Development of the Apresia 16000 series

Hitachi Cable has developed the Apresia 16000 series as a new addition to the Apresia series lineup of Ethernet switches* compatible with international standards.

Well regarded for its high level of reliability, the Apresia series is targeted at wide-area Ethernet networks and next-generation telecommunications networks and is used by a large number of telecommunications carriers, chiefly in Japan. The newly developed Apresia 16000 series complies with standards including the Ethernet OAM (abbreviation for Operations, Administration, Maintenance), a remote network maintenance and administration function for wide-area Ethernet networks standardized by bodies including the Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the IEEE 802 committee, and the PBB function, which can handle both increases in the number of connections and reductions in load. As a result, it is capable of satisfying the required specifications of telecommunications carriers around the world.

In the future, it is expected that the Apresia series will be adopted in wide-area Ethernet networks not just in Japan but overseas as well, and in next-generation mobile-telecommunications networks, in which international standardization is expected to advance.

Mass production of new Mx µBGA semiconductor packaging materials begins

Hitachi Cable has begun mass production of the Mx µBGA*1, a new semiconductor packaging materials it has developed that achieves low cost levels without changing the basic structure of previous µBGA*2, 3 packages.

Until now, µBGA has been employed primarily in high-end fields such as servers, as a semiconductor packaging materials mainly for DRAM*4 memory use. However, due to cost issues its use in the high-volume general-purpose personal computer field has been limited.

The Mx µBGA for which mass production has recently begun has achieved improved production efficiency through widening of the TAB tape used and by installing IC packages at greater densities than on previous products. Furthermore, it employs sheet-based implementation technologies instead of the reel-to-reel implementation employed in previous µBGA technologies. This makes it possible for manufacturer customers implementing this technology to employ existing implementation infrastructures when using Mx µBGA.

Hitachi Cable plans to expand µBGA’s share of the DRAM packaging materials market through introduction of Mx µBGA, which boast strong cost competitiveness in terms of both TAB tape and implementation.

*1 Mx µBGA is an abbreviation for Matrix µBGA.
*2 BGA is an abbreviation for “ball grid array.”
*3 MICRO BGA is a registered trademark of Tessera, Inc. of the United States.
*4 DRAM is an abbreviation for Dynamic Random Access Memory. Memory that can write and read out at anytime requiring memory holding.

Halogen-free harness developed for use in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Hitachi Cable has developed halogen-free 150°C-heat-resistant harnesses for use in hybrid electric vehicles.

As awareness of the need to protect the environment has increased in recent years, there has been increasing demand for elimination of substances harmful to the environment from auto parts as well. To respond to such demand, Hitachi Cable has developed a power cable harness for use in hybrid electric vehicles coated with a halogen-free material that includes no chlorine or bromine while maintaining high levels of heat resistance and flexibility. This product complies with the ISO6722 Class D international standard for automotive cables (maximum working temperature: 150°C).

In the future, Hitachi Cable will work to develop power cable harnesses for use in hybrid electric vehicles capable of withstanding even more severe working conditions and to grow sales by communicating to customers this product’s superiority in terms of reducing environmental impact.

Hitachi Cable energy-conservation system wins the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry General Director’s Award

At the 2008 national energy conservation exhibition organized by the Energy Conservation Center of Japan, Hitachi Cable was awarded the Kanto Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry General Director’s Award for its achievements in energy conservation through development of an automated efficiency controller for guaranteed supply temperature in large-scale air conditioning systems.
This achievement has made it possible for facilities such as clean rooms that employ large-scale sources of hot and cool air for air-conditioning use to achieve significant reductions in energy consumption by reducing the number of cooling units used while still maintaining appropriate temperatures, using a control system available only from Hitachi Cable.

In the future as well, Hitachi Cable will aggressively push forward with efforts in areas such as energy conservation, reducing greenhouse-gas emissions, and decreasing environmental impacts.
