Fulfilling CSR by promoting company activities
Are you familiar with the term CSR? CSR stands for "corporate social responsibility.” The Hitachi Cable Group seeks to fulfill its responsibilities to society through its business activities by pursuing peak performance in communication technologies and services, demonstrating speed, reliability, and efficiency, thereby contributing to a prosperous society.
CSR management
The Hitachi Cable Group seeks to raise CSR awareness throughout management and among all employees through day-to-day business activities, based on the Hitachi Cable Group CSR Policy.
In June 2008, as part of efforts to systematically promote workplace safety and comfort, the Packaging Materials Division achieved certification under Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001, the sole international standard in the field of occupational health and safety management.
In addition, in October 2008, Hitachi Cable published its Corporate Social Responsibility Report 2008, covering CSR activities in the 2008 fiscal year.

Environmental efforts
Reducing waste oil through cleaning lubricant
The Hitachi Cable Group carries out a wide range of efforts to reduce the impact of production activities on the environment. For example, the Toyoura Plant in the city of Hitachi in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan has reduced the total volume of lubricant consumed by storing all lubricant used in production processes in a single tank. By passing lubricant through a centrifugal separator to filter out copper dust mixed in during production processes and thereby extending its useful life, this plant has also cut the amount of waste oil it generates by 10 tons annually. Groupwide efforts to expand opportunities to recycling waste generated in production processes and to ensure thorough segregation of waste by type have made it possible to achieve a final disposal rate* of 0.5 percent – well below the targeted 1.0% set in fiscal 2008.
*Final disposal rate = final waste volume/total waste * 100 (%)

In partnership with society
Participation in the ecoCAP movement
To meet the demands and earn the trust of society, the Hitachi Cable Group undertakes a wide range of activities that contribute to society.
Since November 2007, it has participated in the ecoCAP movement, which involves collecting caps of PET bottles to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions from incineration of the caps as plastic waste. The proceeds from sales of these caps provide vaccines for various infectious diseases to children around the world. Through the end of August 2008, the Hitachi Cable Group as a whole had collected a cumulative total of 353,280 caps, enough to provide polio vaccines for 442 children. The Group plans to continue these activities into the future.
