71st semiannual business report From April 1, to September 30, 2007

Fulfilling CSR by promoting company activities
Have you heard of the term "CSR"? It's an abbreviation for corporate social responsibility. The businesses of the Hitachi Cable Group provide technologies and services for transmitting energy and information with more speed, accuracy, and efficiency. The Group seeks to help build a more prosperous society by providing uncompromisingly high levels of quality in these communication technologies and services and, by doing so, to fulfill both its mission and its social responsibilities.
CSR management
The Hitachi Cable Group has established a CSR Committee for unified management of individual company activities from a CSR perspective and to promote activities to achieve further improvements in such activities. In addition, in December 2006, it established the Hitachi Cable Group CSR Policy. It is currently working to further improve awareness of CSR among all management personnel and other employees.
The Group has also published the CSR Report 2007. In the past, these reports have chiefly consisted of information concerning environmental activities. However, with the 2007 report, the Report has begun to cover CSR activities from a more general perspective. The Hitachi Cable Group CSR Policy and the CSR Report 2007 are available at the following URL (The CSR Report 2007 is available from March 2008):

Environmental efforts
Measures to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions: promoting switching to other fuels
The Hitachi Cable Group is implementing a wide range of efforts to minimize the environmental impact of its production activities.
These efforts include promoting a plan to switch fuels from butane gas, fuel oil (JIS K2205-Grade1), and kerosene to city gas (liquefied natural gas) as a key measure for reducing carbon-dioxide emissions. Making this switch at the Densen Works in Hitachi City, Ibaraki Pref., has already reduced carbon-dioxide emissions by 2,100 tons/year. Through further changes in the fuels it uses, the Group plans to reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by a total of 9,800 tons during the 2008 fiscal year.

Volunteer activities at the Kasumigaura Marathon
As a responsible corporate citizen, the Hitachi Cable Group is implementing a wide range of social outreach activities intended to meet the needs and win the confidence of society. Each April, volunteers from Hitachi Cable provide support for the International Blind Marathon Kasumigaura. Members of the Hitachi Cable marathon club escort blind runners, while general employees participate as guide assistants.
The marathon club plans to run in the 52nd New Year Ekiden (national corporate long-distance relay race) to be held January 1, 2008. Don't forget to cheer the club on in this prestigious competition!
