Hitachi Cable’s Wires and Wiring Devices Contribute to Increasing Sophistication of Electronic Devices

The increasing sophistication of electronic equipment has spurred demand for interface technologies enabling transmission of large amounts of digital data with speed and accuracy when devices are made smaller, and have to offer more functions, they become more complex, and this increases the component mounting density. As a result, reducing the dimensions of signal transmission paths, adding measures against noise, and preventing interference become pressing concerns. Making the most of its technological expertise in the fields of precision machining, insulating materials, and high-frequency applications, Hitachi Cable responds to these needs with a wide assortment of products that help foster miniaturization and sophistication in electronic devices.

Micro-coaxial cables, 2-conductor micro-coaxial cables “Twinax”

Thinner cables are in demand for use in increasingly slim notebook PCs. Since the signal path between the CPU and LCD in particular is repeatedly bent, these cables must also offer sufficient mechanical strength. Similarly, in mobile phones, PDAs, and digital cameras, cables linking the main body and the display must feature the challenging combination of minimal diameter and high durability. Hitachi Cable’s micro-coaxial cables are becoming widely recognized as the best response to these challenging demands.

Using conductors in the 42 to 36 AWG* size range, we developed micro-coaxial cables with outer diameters of 0.31 to 0.53 mm. Although the diameters we are working with are very small, the cables feature a shield layer that significantly reduces the effects of noise resulting from miniaturization and higher-density mounting relative to conventional wires or FPCs. These products are exceptionally durable, with high flexural and torsional strength, and are therefore suitable not only for ordinary folding LCD devices but also for the rotating LCD screens used in mobile phones, digital cameras, and tablet PCs. Twinax is a two-conductor micro-coaxial cable in which the conductor pair and insulators are housed in an outer jacket. Thanks to its outstanding electrical characteristics and immunity to noise, Twinax is used as a signal path in notebook PCs and LCD/plasma TVs that require transmission of enormous amounts of data.

* AWG: American Wire Gauge, a unit of conductor size. The larger the value, the smaller the diameter.

Compact wiring devices (FFC, MFJ)

Making the most of its technological expertise in materials and precision machining, Hitachi Cable offers a wide assortment of wiring devices that contribute to the miniaturization of electronic equipment, higher-density mounting, and reduced cost.

FFC (flexible flat cable), flat conductors laminated with polyester film, features up to 60 conductors (with a pitch of 0.5 mm). Thanks to its significantly reduced size (thickness of 0.1 to 0.3 mm) and increased flexibility, FFC has found application in a variety of fields: electronic equipment, communications devices, internal wiring of in-vehicle systems, and signal transmission to inkjet printer heads, to name a few.

MFJ (multi frame joiner) is an internal wiring material the shape of which can be tailored according to the wiring space within a device. Materials for the conductor include aluminum and nickel. Moreover, product design allows you to change conductor pitches and modify wiring direction. MFJ is used in power units such as secondary battery packs, internal wiring materials for LCD panel boards, and flat coils used for switching among power supplies.
