Chapter-2-2 Achieves connectivity with multiple vendors' SIP servers
WirelessIP5000 has outstanding characteristics such as compliance with SIP*4, a standard protocol for IP telephony, and connectivity with multiple vendors' SIP servers. Due to slight differences in SIP implementation among providers and vendors, there have been considerable constraints on combinations of SIP servers and phones-for example, "Vendor A's phones can be connected only to Vendor A's server." To address this problem, we validated connectivity between the WirelessIP5000 and every SIP server whose specifications were available to us, and released the WirelessIP5000 as the first vendor-independent wireless IP phone. Since WirelessIP5000 is compliant with a popular wireless standard, IEEE802.11b, it can be used with the existing wireless LAN environment in most offices to build a wireless IP telephony network.
In addition, the WirelessIP5000 is designed to ensure safe and comfortable use regardless of the office environment. For example, to prevent information leaks due to "tapping" or "spoofing" in the wireless LAN environment, we achieve secure communications through the use of a digital certificate issued by VeriSign Japan. Furthermore, the WirelessIP5000 supports instant messaging for sending/receiving messages in real time, and "presence awareness," which allows you to check the status of the person you are calling, with messages such as [Out] and [Lunch break] shown on the terminal screen. In preparation for an age of ubiquitous computing, the WirelessIP5000 provides ease in office communications.
There are an increasing number of locations where you can use wireless LAN access-such as train stations, public facilities, parks, and coffee shops-in addition to offices. We are now carrying out studies with the aim of enable use of the WirelessIP5000 at these outside access spots in the future.
*4 SIP (Session Initiation Protocol): A type of call control protocol used on IP networks. SIP allows for various services, including telephony, videoconference, instant messaging, and presence awareness. It is fast becoming the de facto standard protocol for IP telephony in Japan.
