(1) Wireless IP Phone "WirelessIP5000"
VoIP (Voice over IP), a communications technology that allows for voice communication using Internet technology, has been highlighted recently as a way to substantially reduce companies' communications costs. Although SIP*12 is gaining ground as a standard communications protocol for VoIP in Japan, differing SIP implementations between communication service providers as well as server manufacturers has limited the variety of server-terminal combinations. Hitachi Cable's WirelessIP5000 is a vendor-independent wireless IP phone that can connect to any SIP servers whose specifications have been disclosed to us. Since WirelessIP5000 is compliant with a popular wireless standard, IEEE802.11b, it can be used with the existing wireless LAN environment in the office to build a wireless IP telephony network. With features including instant messaging and presence (location) awareness, the WirelessIP5000 rivals conventional mobile phones in both functionality and operability. The WirelessIP5000 facilitates the creation of an efficient business communications environment.

(2) AquaVocal
Most of the IP-PBX/SIP servers available today are high-end products that can accommodate 500 to 1,000 users, or more. Their initial cost is not less than a few million yen, which has been a considerable roadblock keeping a lot of small- to medium-sized businesses from adopting VoIP. To encourage more customers to adopt VoIP, Hitachi Cable will release the AquaVocal series, middle-range VoIP solutions suitable for small- to medium-sized offices of up to 200. AquaVocal contains various functions in its compact body, including PRI*13 and PSTN*14 gateways; the software can also be upgraded to support IP-PBX. Other major features include Web-style interfaces for function settings, and outstanding maintainability such as remote maintenance and backup flash memory for quick system recovery in case of trouble. By combining products that have SIP, PBX, and/or IP routing functions, the system can be flexibly tailored to meet a wide range of user needs, from use with the existing PBX and telephone network (Step 1), to partial introduction of IP telephony (Step 2), to full introduction of IP telephony (Step 3). The system can be extended step by step, with only necessary components added as needed, helping to curb investment costs by allowing the use of existing equipment.
*13 PRI = Primary Rate Interface
*14 PSTN = Public Switched Telephone Network
