Hitachi Cable is an active participant in Japan's ITS project, which seeks to create a safer and more comfortable driving environment. The project concentrates on such activities as development of Leaky WaveGuide (LWG) technology allowing telecommunication between vehicles and transportation infrastructure and antennae for use with ETC systems taking advantage of wireless technology and encompassing mobile telephone base stations.

Hitachi Cable has applied its proprietary fiber optic temperature sensing technology to construct a road surface freezing detection system utilizing both fiber optic and radar technologies. In addition to measuring the temperature below the road surface with sensors embedded in the median strip and the shoulder, areas of the road with a high risk of freezing are identified using a combination of meteorological data including ambient temperature and humidity, rainfall volume, and snow accumulation. These systems have already been installed in some areas and are increasing the level of safety on winter roads.
