Television and radio broadcasting, media that touch our daily lives, have played an important role in building Japan's culture and economy. The recent technological revolution in the communications field is helping to bring about a major change in television and radio: the change from analog to digital broadcasting. CS digital broadcasting began in Japan in 1996, and BS digital broadcasting began in 2000. Plans are moving forward to digitalize the widely used ground wave broadcasting system in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya by the end of 2003, and in Japan as a whole by the end of 2006.
