Environmental Management Evaluation System, GREEN21 Ver 3

Based on an evaluation system for environmental measurement, "GREEN21," the Hitachi Group evaluates environmental management levels and improves unsatisfactory items to enhance the management level. For "GREEN21 Ver 3" that began in FY2007, 640 Green Points (GP) achieved in Ver 2 activities are taken as a reference, and Ver 3 aims to achieve an environmental management level of 1,280 GP in FY2011.
In FY2009, the result was 1,134 GP, exceeding our target of 1,024 GP, accounting for a 209 GP improvement from the environmental management level evaluation of 925 GP in FY2008. Looking at individual categories, the scores for thorough compliance of internal rules in selecting suppliers in the green procurement category and improved utilization of chemical substance control system in procured products drastically improved, and in the eco-factory (resource recycling) category, the targets of VOC emissions and voluntarily controlled chemical substance emissions were achieved, which resulted in a drastic overall improvement.

Compliance status of environmental laws and regulations

There were no legal violations or guidance by an authority in FY2009.
With regard to compliance with limit values, there was a case where we exceeded the drainage limit value. At the regular voluntary measurements of drainage at the Head Office Plant of Tohoku-Rubber Co., Ltd., 6.7mg/litters of normal hexane was detected. There was leakage trouble of hydraulic oil, which was immediately collected and cleaned away, but a very small amount of the oil flowed into the inplant channel, unnoticed. We promptly made a report to the relevant authorities and re-checked and cleaned the channel.
We had a total of three external complaints. Two of them were about noise at the Densen and Tsuchiura Works. Local residents complained about noise at night, and as a countermeasure, we measured noise levels in the neighborhoods concerned, analyzed the results and implemented soundproof treatment of the facilities assumed as the source of the noise and reduced the nighttime power. The other was a complaint from a landowner that at the Ishioka Works of Tonichi Kyosan Cable, Ltd. rainwater directly dropped into the adjacent site from the roof of tent warehouses used for storing products. We installed gutters onto the tent warehouses to have the rainwater flow into the rainwater drain channel, and also laid crushed stones on the ground in order that the rainwater would not flow into the neighboring site.

Environmental auditing

Environmental audit (in the field) Scene of physical inspection (Tonichi Kyosan Cable, Ltd.)

In relation to environmental auditing, we conduct onsite surveys of manufacturing sites and check the environmental management result report that sums up compliance status results.
Based on the FY2009 environmental auditing plan, one domestic manufacturing site was environmentally audited, and we confirmed there was no significant problem. We also checked the environmental management result report, found one case where a regulated value was in excess and another case where a voluntary control value was in excess and confirmed that both cases had already been solved.
At the same time, we also study and review the results of internal auditing based on individual units of ISO14001 certification in terms of mechanism. Non-conformities were not significant or subject to observation, and management reviews were conducted properly. Through these auditing and checking processes, we check and confirm compliance, risk management and systems throughout the Group.

Reduced risk with environmental facility checkups

Environmental facilities risk checkup (Tsuchiura Works)

All works conduct risk checks on environmental facilities every year. In FY2009, we conducted checkups of chemical solution storage tanks, oil storage tanks, chemical storage, facilities where chemicals are used, exhaust gas cleaning towers, high-pressure gas facilities and waste water processing facilities in order to identify whether there is any risk of contamination in daily operations and to confirm whether impact could be kept to minimum if natural disasters such as earthquakes, winds or floods, accidents or operational mistakes occurred. Based on the results of the checkups, all the works improve the facilities that require attention, reducing the risk of contamination.

External evaluations of our environmental initiatives

In FY2009, environmental initiatives taken by our Group received the following evaluations. In the "12th Environmental Management Corporate Ranking" by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun, Hitachi Cable was ranked 54th in the manufacturers category. Our Takasago Works won a "MITI Kanto Director Award" for its energy-saving initiatives. Our Group company, Suzhou Hitachi Cable Precision Co., Ltd. was recognized by the Environment Protection Agency of Suzhou Industrial Park for the company's efforts for drastic reductions in the amount of waste water.

Energy-saving initiatives by the Takasago Works, winning a MITI Kanto Director Award

The Takasago Works realized an operating system that can drastically reduce power costs in the semiconductor clean room with a large cooling heat source for air conditioning. To be precise, the control system uses our exclusive PLC *1 temperature compensation, an important control factor while automatically conducting "Yosedome *2" control to minimize the number of chillers in operation. The concept of this initiative to "save energy by developing temperature-compensation, automatic yosedome control for a large cooling heat source for air conditioning" was highly appreciated for being applicable to a wide range of energyconsuming equipment and was recognized as an excellent case at FY2009 National Convention of Excellent Energy-saving Cases, winning a MITI Kanto Director Award.

*1 PLC is Programmable Logic Controller, which uses a microcomputer exclusively for sequence control.
*2 Yosedome means to integrate pieces of equipment with low utilization rates to minimize the number of units in operation while realizing the equivalent effects.

Efforts by Suzhou Hitachi Cable Precision Co., Ltd. drastically reduced the amount of waste water

Efforts by Suzhou Hitachi Cable Precision Co., Ltd. drastically reduced the amount of waste water Suzhou Hitachi Cable Precision Co., Ltd. in China employs a recycling system to process drainage exhausted from the plating process of the lead frame and reuses it for plating water as a measure to reduce the amount of waste water at the drainage processing facility. As a result, the company achieved a 99% reduction in the amount of drainage from the conventional 89,760 cubic meters to about 1,200 cubic meters per year. This drastic effect of drainage reduction was highly evaluated in August 2008, and during the Experience Exchange Meeting of Water Recycling in Suzhou Industrial Park, the initiative was introduced and recognized by the Environment Protection Agency of Suzhou Industrial Park in December 2008.
