In purchasing raw materials, parts and components, packing materials and completed products, the Hitachi
Cable Group makes it a basic rule to procure products and services with less environmental burden by requesting
suppliers to 1) promote resource saving, 2) reduce energy consumption in downtime and in use 3) promote
recycling, 4) reduce the amount of packing/packaging materials, 5) offer environmental information on products, 6)
make efforts to properly use chemical substances.

Management of Chemical Substances Contained in Products |
Management of Chemical Substances Contained in Products,
which started in the EU (European Union) expanded the
range of substances as well as products subject to control,
increasing its impact as illustrated by the fact that countries
outside the EU have started to regulate them. Recently
REACH regulations have been enforced, while in Japan,
guidelines and survey tools were published by the Japan
Article Management Promotion-Consortium, the Japan
Green Procurement Survey Standardization Initiative, the
Automobile Parts & Materials Information Collection and
Management System and other industrial associations, and
we are required to respond to these initiatives. The Hitachi
Cable Group has already established a unique system to
manage chemical substances contained in products, "Hi-
PECCS," to comply with RoHS and ELV directives, and
centrally controls 15 Level A Prohibited Substances and
10 Level B Controlled Substances, operating a mechanism
to stop shipments of any product containing chemical
substances exceeding regulated values.
For the response to the new regulation in Reach
rules, "Substances of Very High Concern," we have held
explanatory meetings for suppliers together with them, as
the number of substances subject to this rule is as high as
about 1,500. Going forward, we shall promote the collection
of data on procured items subject to this rule and plan to
provide customers with the data as well as a summary of
product data.

Green purchasing of stationery and office supplies |
|
 |
We promote the purchase of stationery and office supplies
with little environmental burdens such as Eco Mark-certified
products, Green Mark products and products compliant with
the Green Purchase Law. When we purchase stationery and
office supplies on the Internet* and if products with little
environmental burdens and regular products are available,
we choose and purchase the former, and set a target of
increasing the purchasing rate of such products to total
purchase costs of each category to more than 90%.
In FY2009, the green purchase ratio of Web purchase was 96.8%.
